Coming up next week, Paleo Diet Lifestyle is thrilled to present Your Guide to Paleo, a quick field guide to the most common Paleo questions and concerns, and written specifically with newcomers in mind. Head on over to the Coming Soon page to check it out and enter an iPad Air giveaway!

The Guide itself won’t be released until Tuesday, so while you’re waiting, check out some other news from this week:

  • In a decision that everyone can get behind, the FDA recently cracked down on trans fats. A new ruling proposed removing partially hydrogenated oils (the source of dangerous artificial trans fats) from the list of food ingredients that are “generally recognized as safe.” This would eliminate the loophole that allowed food manufacturers to get away with “0 trans fats” on the label if a product contained less than 0.5 grams per serving, a loophole that allowed unscrupulous corporations to sneak in substantial amounts of trans fats just by making the “serving size” absurdly small.

  • Unfortunately, the food politics isn’t all such good news: Michele at Eat Drink Politics takes a big-picture look at the GMO labeling debate that’s been going on across several different states, and her conclusions aren’t very optimistic.
  • The defense of butter continues on Dr. Briffa’s blog, with a new article taking on the “evidence” that margarine is better for you.
  • An interesting article from NPR examines what we know about diet and the gut microbiome (not much), and how we might be able to manipulate it (more vegetables!)
  • Chris Kresser reviewed a book on carbohydrates and the brain, and defends safe starches against the charge that they’re bad for mental health. The short version: just because something works as a treatment for sick people doesn’t mean it’s automatically better for healthy people to do it too.
