We’re back with yet another summary of what has been happening over the past week in the Paleo community. I must say that it has been somewhat quiet, but I can only assume that this is the result of summer vacation. That, or everyone is heavily engrossed in the final week of the Olympic Games. Over the past few days I’ve been thinking a lot about the Olympic athletes and what their diets must be made up of. In truth, what I was really looking for was to find someone who is on a Paleo diet. There has been no direct mention of this from what I’ve seen, but there has been some buzz around gold medallist, swimmer Dana Vollmer. She has opened up about her struggle with her performance over the years and has just recently been able to link it to what she eats. Although she is not Paleo, she is an avid follower of a gluten-free diet and she says that this has been the key to her success at this year’s games. Take a look a this article to learn more about her struggles with her health over the years.

Despite the summer lull, we have been working away on getting some great information circulating amongst the community. This past week we published a hit article about Raising Happy and Healthy Paleo Kids. This just so happens to be one of the greatest challenges that families face on a Paleo diet. It’s also a topic we get asked about all the time. You’ll find some very helpful information, along with great tips, so it’s a must read. Aside from the topic of kids on the diet, we also explored a very controversial topic our article about pseudograins and non-gluten grains. Perhaps one of the most popular non-gluten grains is rice. Many Paleo followers will include rice in their diet, often in the form of rice flour for those who suffer from nut allergies. Although these types of grains are not always detrimental to your health, we explored the reasons as to why they are still not the best option out there for healthy carbs.

Caveman and fireWondering what we were cooking this week? Well, this Asparagus Pesto could be the easiest recipe we ever prepared. With less than 5 ingredients and a preparation time of just a few minutes, it’s a must try. We also shared a recipe for sautéed vegetables with a delicious curry sauce. It’s great to serve as a lunch dish, or even as a warm appetizer. While we’re still on the topic of food and recipes, you should head over to one of our favourite resources to get good quality food online, U.S. Wellness Meats, for some delicious liverwurst. It’s currently on sale so get it while you can. It’s a great way to incorporate highly nutritious organ meats like liver in your diet. I also recommend you take some time to browse their online shop while you’re over there. They have a great selection of grass-fed meat products that can be delivered to your door. This can sure beat having to drive a few hours into the country to your closest grass-fed meat farmer.

We have a great book recommendation for you. Get your hands on a copy of The Perfect Health Diet if you haven’t read it yet. We’re currently reading it… again! In fact, it’s a book you’ll probably never stop reading, as you’ll continually reference it. It’s, in our opinion, the best book ever written about health and nutrition. The Perfect Health Diet website is a source of information that we’ve been recommending for a while now already and the ideas shared there have helped move the Paleo community to a much better place.

Finally, head over at Chris Kresser’s website to read his great article explaining why eating less vegetables can be a good strategy for those struggling with digestive issues. He also references our great guide for fermented and lacto-fermented foods.
